Sharing our learning with room 6.

Today is student conference night. We were lucky to have room 6 join us after morning tea to have a run through with our "how we learn" kōrero. They shared their learning with us too, but theirs was done on their chromebooks. We all thought that was pretty cool!! Our favourite part was watching their rocket challenge videos.

Celebrating Matariki .

This week we celebrated Matariki in Kawakawa Primary School style, with TUNA and TAKAKAU.
Every morning students were able to bring in 1 long finned tuna to be weighed and entered into the competition. Room 16 sat in awe at all the tuna that were entered, there were some HUGE tuna. WOW!!
Daniel entered a takakau into the takakau competition, he was proud to receive a certificate of participation.
On the final day of Matariki celebrations we had open classrooms and our whānau were able to sit in and see what we have learnt about Matariki. Thank you Whaea Moria for joining us. Each syndicate performed kapa haka items to our whānau, and we shared a hangi to end our celebrations.
Ngā mihi o te tau hou Māori kiā koutou katoa.

Our class assembly.

Today was our class assembly.
We loved sharing our learning with the kura and our whānau who came to watch. This week we have been working hard at putting our items together and creating props for our presentations.
Here are the videos we shared, and pics of the day.
Thank you to all our whānau who came to watch us.

Poetry Fridays.

Every Friday we do a poem based on our letter of the week.
We become letter detectives and find all the "focus letters" within our poem.
Today we made kites out of felt for the letter K. Whaea Sharon gives us a demonstration on how to cut and glue, she also shows us different ideas so that we put our own spin on our art.
We then take our poetry books home to share with our whānau.

Elizabeth is being a clever word detective.

As is Malachi.

Whaea Sharon showing everyone how to create their kites.

We love arts and crafts!

Cultural Festival

On Friday our school hosted the SOUTHERN BAY OF ISLANDS CULTURAL FESTIVAL. We welcomed kura and kohanga from our kahui to join us in show casing talents that included kapa haka and hula. These kura were Hukerenui, Paihia, Waikare, and Kawakawa kohanga reo. Some of our room 16 tamariki are member of the teina kapa haka roopu, Te Mana Tamariki o Kawakawa.

A big thank you to all our awesome whanau for the tautoko.

Check out their amazing performance.

Our Ruapekapeka Pā designs.

We have been learning about land wars that happened in our area. We have been investigating Ruapekapeka pā which is located a few km's away from our kura.
The tamariki in Room 16 have created a story based on our class brain storm, they have also designed their own pā.
We hope you like our pictures.

Te Reo Māori

We are lucky to have Whaea Whetū come into our akomanga and teach us te reo Māori.
Today we recapped on our last lesson "He aha tēnei?" "What is this?" Whaea Whetū points to a picture and we answer by saying "He.................tēna" "That is a ......."

Learning about healthy kai.

Today, together with Ngā Rau Rito we learnt about healthy foods. Fui from Project Energize talked about the importance of good kai. She said our bodies are just like a car and if we put the wrong gas in it we wont work that well.
We learnt the 4 food groups and different kai that goes into those groups.
They are: Fruit and veges, meat and meat alternatives, milk and milk products, and grain foods.

We had heaps of fun looking at the different kai, they looked so real!!!

Thank you Whaea Vanessa and Ngā Rau Rito for sharing your class with us, and thank you Fui for teaching us some new things. We look forward to our next lesson.

How tall are you?

We stood in a line from the shortest to the tallest.
Then we lay on our back and drew a line at our feet and the top of our head.

We used finger span to see how tall we were.
We then tried someone that was the same length as us.

Check out our photos.
-Korero given by Room 16, written by Whaea Toni.

Haylow is the tallest and Elizabeth is the shortest.

Look at all those different lengths!

We are using finger span to measure ourselves.

We are seeing if any of our friends are the same length as us.

Non-Standard measurement.

We are learning about non-standard measurement in maths.
We know that this means using things around the class to measure.

WHAT WE NOTICED.
We noticed that a non-standard measurement tool doesn't have numbers on it like a ruler does.
We also noticed that everyone's hand span and finger span was different!!!

Fineone measures the white board.

Rayna shows Manihera how to use handspan.

Eze can measure a chair using finger span.

Check out all our different hand span sizes!!!

Term 2 in Room 16.

This term we have Whaea Toni as our kaiako while Whaea Narelle is teaching in London. We wish Whaea Narelle all the best on her adventure and look forward to hearing and reading all about it.
Today was our first day back and we spent the day showing Whaea Toni how we do things in our class, sharing stories about our holiday, and exploring our akomanga.
