Celebrating Matariki .

This week we celebrated Matariki in Kawakawa Primary School style, with TUNA and TAKAKAU.
Every morning students were able to bring in 1 long finned tuna to be weighed and entered into the competition. Room 16 sat in awe at all the tuna that were entered, there were some HUGE tuna. WOW!!
Daniel entered a takakau into the takakau competition, he was proud to receive a certificate of participation.
On the final day of Matariki celebrations we had open classrooms and our whānau were able to sit in and see what we have learnt about Matariki. Thank you Whaea Moria for joining us. Each syndicate performed kapa haka items to our whānau, and we shared a hangi to end our celebrations.

Our class assembly.

Today was our class assembly.
We loved sharing our learning with the kura and our whānau who came to watch. This week we have been working hard at putting our items together and creating props for our presentations.
Here are the videos we shared, and pics of the day.
Thank you to all our whānau who came to watch us.

Poetry Fridays.

Every Friday we do a poem based on our letter of the week.
We become letter detectives and find all the "focus letters" within our poem.
Today we made kites out of felt for the letter K. Whaea Sharon gives us a demonstration on how to cut and glue, she also shows us different ideas so that we put our own spin on our art.
We then take our poetry books home to share with our whānau.

Elizabeth is being a clever word detective.

As is Malachi.

Whaea Sharon showing everyone how to create their kites.

We love arts and crafts!

Cultural Festival

On Friday our school hosted the SOUTHERN BAY OF ISLANDS CULTURAL FESTIVAL. We welcomed kura and kohanga from our kahui to join us in show casing talents that included kapa haka and hula. These kura were Hukerenui, Paihia, Waikare, and Kawakawa kohanga reo. Some of our room 16 tamariki are member of the teina kapa haka roopu, Te Mana Tamariki o Kawakawa.

A big thank you to all our awesome whanau for the tautoko.

Check out their amazing performance.
